1940 HMS Achilles returns Home

British Newsreel. March 21, 1940.HMNZS Achilles was a Leander class cruiser which served with the Royal New Zealand Navy in World War II. She became famous for her part in the Battle of the River Plate, alongside HMS Ajax and HMS Exeter.She was the second of five ships of the Leander class light cruisers, designed as effective follow-ons to the York class. Upgraded to Improved Leander class, she was capable of carrying an aircraft, becoming the first ship to carry a Supermarine Walrus although this was removed before the war.Achilles was originally built for the Royal Navy, and was commissioned as HMS Achilles on October 10, 1933. She served with the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division from March 31, 1937 up to the creation of the Royal New Zealand Navy, into which she was transferred in September 1941, renamed as HMNZS Achilles. Her crew was approximately 60% from New Zealand.On the outbreak of the Second World War, Achilles started patrolling the west coast of South America looking for German merchant ships, but by 22 October 1939 she had arrived at the Falkland Islands, where she was assigned to the South American Division under Commodore Henry Harwood and allocated to Force G (HMS Exeter and Cumberland).In the early morning of 1939-12-13 a force consisting of Achilles, HMS Ajax and Exeter detected smoke on the horizon, which was confirmed at 06:16 to be a pocket battleship, thought to be Admiral Scheer but which turned out to be the Admiral Graf Spee. A fierce battle ensued, at a range of approximately 20 km (22,000 yards). Achilles took some damage: four crew were killed, and her captain, W. E. Parry was injured. In the exchange of fire 36 of Graf Spee's crew were killed. The range reduced to about four miles (7 km) at around 07:15 and Admiral Graf Spee broke off the engagement around 07:45 to head for the neutral harbour of Montevideo which she entered at 22:00 that night, having been pursued by Achilles and Ajax all day. She was forced by international law to leave with 72 hours. Faced with what he believed to be overwhelming odds, the captain of the Admiral Graf Spee, Hans Langsdorff, scuttled his ship rather than risk the lives of his crew.Following the battle, Achilles returned to Auckland, New Zealand on 23 February 1940, where she was refitted until June. After Japan entered the war, she escorted troop convoys, then joined the ANZAC squadron in the south west Pacific. While operating off New Georgia with U.S. forces, she was hit by a bomb on X turret on 5 January 1943. She was repaired at Portsmouth from April 1943 to May 1944, during which X turret was replaced by four two-pounders. Sent to the Eastern Fleet, Achilles then joined the British Pacific Fleet (Task Force 57) in May 1945 for final operations in the Pacific.After the war, Achilles was returned to the Royal Navy at Sheerness, Kent, England on 17 September 1946. She was then sold to the Indian Navy and recommissioned on 5 July 1948 as INS Delhi. She remained in service until decommissioned for scrap at Bombay on 30 June 1978. As part of the scrapping her Y turret was removed and given as a gift to the New Zealand government, it is now on display at the entrance of Devonport RNZN Base in Auckland.

"Friends" is the second track from the 1970 album Led Zeppelin III, the third studio album of English rock band Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote the song in 1970 at Bron-Yr-Aur, a small cottage in Wales where they stayed after completing a gruelling concert tour of the United States.

The song starts out with a little noodling and studio chatter before the guitars of Jimmy Page kick in. The guitar tuning for the song is an open-C6 chord (C-A-C-G-C-E). The same tuning was used by Page on the track "Bron-Yr-Aur" (which was recorded during these same sessions), as well as the song "Poor Tom". Page used an Altair Tube Limiter to enhance the acoustic quality of his Harmony guitar, a device recommended to him by an acoustic guitarist named Dick Rosemenie. This same device was later used by Page on "All My Love", which was included on Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door album.

"Friends" is one of a few Led Zeppelin songs that included strings. Bass player John Paul Jones did the string arrangement, which exhibits some distinctive Eastern influences. Some commentators have expressed surprise at the fact that Jones received no writing credit for this song, given that he was entirely responsible for its compelling string arrangement.

The outro to the song includes a Moog synthesizer, which provides a link to the next track on the album, "Celebration Day".

The lyrics say that when someone is lonely or sad, that you should "Give them a smile." Or in other words, make them feel better.

The only known live performance of the song by Led Zeppelin was on 29 September 1971 in Osaka, during the band's Japanese concert tour, as is exhibited on a number of Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings of the show. If listened to closely, Page can be heard asking Plant if he wanted to perform the song when John Bonham had returned from unknown activities backstage.

Influenced by Neil Young, similarities have been noticed between "Friends" and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's "Carry On", with the first part of the songs being almost identical.[who?].

The song was re-recorded by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant with the Bombay Symphony Orchestra in 1972, during their trip to India, along with another track, "Four Sticks" from Led Zeppelin IV. This version featured tabla drums and sitars. The recordings have never been released officially and are only available on Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings. The project is said to have run into problems because Page complained that the orchestra didn't keep time in the Western style and some of them drank rather a lot.

"Friends" was also recorded by Page and Plant on their 1994 release No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, accompanied by a Middle-Eastern orchestra.

Artists from three different cities in the world have come together to create a unique remix blending cultures of the West and the East. Jay Sean, a British Asian R&B singer best known for his hits "Stolen", "Eyes On You" and "Ride It" has released two albums, Me Against Myself and My Own Way which has produced five top 20 hits in the UK singles chart. Anushka, a Bollywood singer from Mumbai has sung tracks in Chak De India, De Taali, Cash and Golmaal. Cary left his impoverished home, not because his parents didn't love him, but because they love him very much. They simply could not provide the things their poor little boy needed.

You will watch as Cary comes anxiously skipping to us on June 9, 2004. He knew almost no English, was regularly running away from school ... and as you will see ... was literally a bag of bones. He needed food desperately.I told our house mother, "Feed him, feed him, feed him!" You will see him on the first night, and the transformation after only thirty days, and then after ninety days when he took his own portrait with my digital camera at http://fiwl.wordpress.com/

And now you will see what he's turned out to be as a fifteen year old with dreams to become an air line pilot. We are currently looking for sponsors to take him to the the States to get his private pilot's license and beyond. One elderly man has come forward who will help him both with the training and a place to stay. He is a pilot and gave Cary a model airplane which Cary loved building. Cary would really have a leg up on the young men of India if we do this, because India doesn't allow them to train until they are twenty-one. However, India does recognize the licensing from western countries. He could actually solo in America at age sixteen. The elderly man in Washington willing to help soloed on his own sixteenth birthday and is happy to help Cary along.

Perhaps because of such a hard life, Cary's a serious boy and thinks about sophisticated things all the time. He loves math and wants to build another remote controlled airplane. There is hardly anything like that here in India.

He and his parents visit each other regularly. Cary is now mature and responsible enough to ride the Bombay (Mumbai) trains and buses all by himself to go visiting.Its amazing what just a few things like food, shelter, eye glasses and dental braces did for one little, pitiful, wasted boy in one of Bombay's many slums. You will see what he has become in the video below. We believe Cary can become anything he wants to be, go where ever he wants to go, and do whatever he wants to do.

Cary is the proof that children are the same all over the world, no different than your own, and when given the opportunity, they excel just like any other child. The major differences in Cary's life is that there is no stigma of caste, poverty or education haunting his future, AND he speaks English like an American. It's an interesting point because the International air lines are requiring the pilots to speak better American English. Hmmm. Pray for his future!
